Showdown in Chinatown

That's how close the Bardtard got to Canada's Pro-Basketball God Steve Nash today. In the 5 minutes I was being caught in the mob, I must have absorb at least 0.005% of his uber mojo. Enough for me to hit some open jumpers at a park nearby a little later. I even got a soggy towel signed by the man. Damn. I gotta say, the Phoenix Suns players that were there were great...they stuck around to talk to fans, take photos and autographs. Jason Kidd too. Too bad Baron Davis and the Euro guys left early. I know Henry was a big deal for half the fans gathered there.

Btw, seeing Marc Stein play was....interesting...huh...

The Offspring of Too Much Exp.

So I just found out about this game, Battle Fantasia being released on PS3 and XBox 360 in Japan on May 29th. Initially it was an arcade fighter developed by the guys at Arc-System Works, so you can somewhat guess what to expect. The theme this time however is not some uber-futuristic landscape but the gumdrop slime bashing fun of adventure in storybook land. Merging 3D graphics with 2D gameplay, this game is something like a disgusting mish mash of Eternal Sonata meets Guilty Gear. Arc-System Works is getting a little lazy as you can hear some repeated sound effects from their previous title ("Counter!") and on top of that...is that Sol-Badguy as a priest? I mean if they were using the same voice actors could they at least direct him to not sound so much the same? I keep expecting him to shout "Gatling Flame!". This game is probably gonna be overpriced and not worth your money at release, possibly not making it to the US because of it's extremely limited exposure.

Helping Hands

So there was this guy, just standing around the corner scratching his junk like he ain't got a #$%^ing care in the world. Everyone does something when people aren't looking, but make damn sure no one is looking! So I'm sitting here thinking about what I should do; I mean the guy is coming right at me, this is gonna be kinda awkward you know? So I did what any self respectable red blooded American would do :
I decided to help the guy out a little. After all, male itch is a leading discomfort amongst the testosterone infused. I did the only thing I could think of doing...
See? Guy won't have to worry about his balls anymore cause he dropped 'em. I bet there's a thank you card and a gift basket on it's way to my barracks right now as we speak. Then again...maybe not. Hmm. Guess I should stop trying to help people out huh?

No Slump for this Doctor

Doctor Slump was the first anime I ever saw even before I realized what "anime" was. Dubbed in chinese on craptacular VHS tapes, this was the heart warming story of a little android pretending to be a girl and wanting to be accepted by the small town of Penguin Village. Oh @#$% that, it was just a bunch of crazy non-sense that tied together a bunch of characters who had no nostrils on their noses and whom wake up every morning to the sun brushing it's teeth while Ultraman fished it out of the horizon. They changed a lot of the characters and for some reason made them all look like Dragonball people but Arale came out ghetto-tastic! Seriously how does a robot have bad eyesight?

Monster Pinky, you've met your Match!

More proof that the Japanese want every single penny out of your wallet, they'll do anything to get it. That includes making these little challengers to the Pinky St. collection of Monster Hunter figurines. Now your battles are both challenging AND cute. Who knew?

"Gundamn it! They Stole My Idea!"

Click me! I'm animated! - (from SeeD Forums)
The title of this post should be an indication of what it must feel like to write a Gundam series these days because it seems the regurgitation didn't get away from 00 100%. Exia now possesses the Trans-Am system, it can now have the horse power of an old muscle car. Apparently that means it can shed after-images and gain about 1000% more performance without G-forces crushing your face. Didn't F-91 already do this? And isn't Unicorn Gundam currently possessing this gimmick as well? I know it somewhat makes sense for Exia but why wouldn't they come up with something a little different. I was somewhat worried about it gaining Wings of Light (after seeing 0 Gundam) though so thankfully that didn't happen again.

Problem I have with it is that Setsuna is stagnating as a pilot. Rather than earn his stripes like Graham Acre or Ali Al Sarshes, he's entirely reliant on his equipment as he's given a Dragonball like power-up for the sake of competing. It's rather frustrating that Graham chooses to use a simple Over Flag (though his is getting a GN-Drive installed) and Setsuna can just coast inside of his Goku-dam. It's at least no where near as bad as Freedom Gundam's "anything you can do I can do better" mode...

Saji seems to be drifting into a dark place now. After all that's happened to him it's no wonder, a lot of people question what his use is in a story like this but you really need to see a war story from all angles. Saji represents the street level point of view which is something that is needed, otherwise you have a story that's much too worried about big robots fighting and no development.

Also, it seems Nena got a taste of her own medicine now, hopefully they'll further develop the character instead of just instantly killing her off (though it's bound to happen sometime). Thing is, it's clear that Nena doesn't know right from wrong (which may have to do with the Throne siblings birth/upbringing) so having her realize her mistakes is much more powerful for a story than to just kill her off.

Finally, Graham is making his comeback. It's much hyped, like some kinda wrestling superstar promo or waiting for the big game 7 during the playoffs. His Over Flag is going to see a GN-Drive Tau upgrade, even though the Flag technology might be inferior he still has an advantage in speed and skill so hopefully he can take advantage of that. Ali Al Sarshes better watch his back cause Graham coming back to claim the number 1 pilot spot!

I waited 20 Episodes for This!

Yup, it finally happened...and boy was it awesome. Lockon decided to save his new boy-toy, well this is what happens when girls dress as guys and pretend to be Mobile Suit pilots. Yeah that's right, totally chauvinist hehe. Seriously though, it was about damn time and even though it's not like I believe for a second one of the main characters could possibly die inside a "GUNDAM!!!"...it was still fun while it lasted. Cheers Lockon, you deserve a cookie.

I Am the Bone of my Sword!!

Only Archer can get away with reciting a 15 minute incantation before unleashing one of the more powerful moves in...well pretty much anything. Fate/stay night finally gets an official fighting game (sorry Fatal/fake) developed by Cavia for Capcom. It looks like a huge cheesy combo-fest but there are counters and combo breaks in the game to temper those pattern traps. The game features lots of characters from the original Fate/stay night and even allowing you to choose people other than Servants to pad out the character select. They even have Dark Sakura from Heaven's Feel so it at least has the popular ones checked. The game isn't even out yet, but can you imagine a upgrade pack featuring characters from /hollow Ataraxia? Damn, can't wait to actually use Unlimited Blade Works...

OMG

Minami-ke...OkiWTH?!

What could possibly go wrong?

Yeah, what could go wrong? Straight out of the gate of a successful season Minami-ke returns with Okawari! But what's this? Why do the Minami sisters look different? What happened to the intro song? How come I feel like this show isn't the same anymore? So as it turns out a bidding war between two studios was settled by simply compromising. One show with two separate teams animating. The first thirteen episodes was hilarious, well drawn and hit just the right notes. However...
What!? Wh-how!? W-why!? Kana it seems having been bored the few hours prior during the turn of the new year decided to lift weights and absolutely HULK OUT! I can understand it if she had something in mind, perhaps a final showdown against her "arch-rival's" golden leg? But what we get here is...Kana...looking (sadly) bigger than even I do irl! And it doesn't stop!
Kana had been a favorite of mine in this show, but to know that under her seifuku lies the body of a Ninja Warrior depresses me to no end. Illusions shattered. Shiratori, next time share your secret training with someone else...please! And forget the fact that Minami-ke was going just fine without overtly stressing fan service moments, the first episode is a "hot springs adventure!" which I guess is fine if the focus wasn't about showing off Kana's new biceps.
Now maybe you guys are looking at me like some kinda alien here, after all not ALL of it is that bad. There are moments when the show does have it's highs when it comes to animation. Yet it never really reaches that simple splendor the first one had. It felt like they really tried hard for every moment in the first series while this one is relegated to times when they felt like doing it. The look of the show isn't the only thing that's suspect, the humor itself is maybe not my cup of tea or more likely not that funny.
Perhaps however I'm the only one who notices this? It can't be though, I believe I've seen others saying that this is simply not up to par with what came before. But does that means DVD sales and ratings won't live up to expectations then? What if Minami-ke doesn't survive this. I'm sure it will, given that the fan service might be up in this season and it seems like the hardcore otaku are going to eat that up (C73 for example had doujinshi based on Minami-ke) but could this show have already jumped the shark? /drama
It is only one episode so far...right...?
